The closing statement of the Mateřinka 2021 jury

Last week, the Czech nation lived mainly on the results of the European Football Championship. Today, however, it will be an exception - today, visitors to cafes, bars and restaurants will require the staff to change the radio and television to cultural news. And then everyone will be eagerly listening to the results of the Mateřinka festival together! And also the closing statement of the jury.

So - what view of the Czech, and therefore European children's theater this year's Mateřinka offered? Above all, it recalled the extraordinary resilience and bravery of puppeteers from big and small ensembles, who survived almost one-year separation from their audience and they are bringing once again new and new projects.

This is the factor of this year's main thematic line. A year of loneliness and distress without any contacts with friends was - either consciously or completely subconsciously - reflected in most of these productions. The audience could then keep their fingers crossed for various guys-loners who long for someone close to them ... Only a great cynic would not be touched in Sleeping Beauty by the fate of a lonely evil god fairy, who the decadent aristocracy treats like dirt. Or the thief from The Little Thumb, who was only a step away from getting a new helper, if not even a friend ... Among other sad souls we can mention, for example, the bear Tulimak or the loneliest giant in the world from the production Nanook, a single father from the DRAK Theatre production Bedtime!, who cannot because of his naughty children go to the bar in the evening to find their new mother, then a frog heroine from the The Old Actress’s Theater trying to break through as a DJ, a lonely Spanish boy with new shoes, a frog Filemon longing to know his origins, a sad nameless Ostrava dog from a junkyard or quartet from two productions of the Alfa Theatre Pilsen: Kryštof, Penguin and two bears. The Portuguese Dom Roberto became a role model for lonely people from all over the world, who reminded us that to achieve the desired love of the princess from the cursed castle, it is enough to destroy a bunch of ghosts and slaughter half of the town by the way ... And it was certainly no coincidence the last but one song from Liberec jukebox started with words: It's hard to be alone ...
